Summer Squash Sesame Noodles
Sesame noodles are one of those things I get cravings for pretty frequently. Somehow they always bring to mind my 20-something days in New York City when Chinese food was the go-to for many a young woman like myself, who was always on the go. They also remind me of one of my most frustrating culinary escapades: the search for the perfect batch. I found them once, quite by accident as I was window shopping on Columbus Avenue one summer afternoon. As was normally the case, sometime in my travels I got so hungry, I felt like I had a hole in my stomach. What to fill it with? Because…
Carrots and Onions and Peppers, Oh My! Salad
I’ve learned that my absolute favorite part of eating raw is not having to cook. I have a deep dislike for the time that cooking takes. Besides the heat of the oven, there’s the absurd amount of times I’ve burned myself with bacon grease. And the red-hot burner of the oven has done me no favors. I have the scars on my hands to prove it! But I love to chop vegetables and to garnish food. The raw lifestyle has essentially created the ideal food prep environment for me: everything I like to do, with no hot stoves. This salad is no exception. Plus, it was a wonderful symphony of…
Babaganoush Dip
This raw eggplant tahini dip tastes like babaghanoush and hummus had a baby.
Great Sex Through Great Food
Great sex is something we all long for and consistently look to someone else to ‘give it to us’. I mean, let’s not deny it: most often all we hear from each other are the complaints about our lovers and what they’re not doing and all the stuff that could make them better. But what can we do to make it all better for ourselves? How Can We Gift Ourselves With Great Sex? Now, I love sex. And not really for any of the obvious reasons: the aspect of release, the intimacy… any of those things. I just think it’s fun! I’ve had many friends bitch about how their significant…
Raw Till 4: Taking The High Road to More Raw
In the beginning, for a few short weeks, I dabbled with a Raw Till 4 kind of scenario. But, the dope that I was, Raw Till 4 just wasn’t good enough for me. I should have stayed there, where it was relatively easy and comfortable. But I had this idea to go whole hog: all day, all raw. It was like a shock to my system. I was hungry. Like some ravenous predator on the Discovery channel. I was bordering on dangerous. Honestly, I could have eaten my own arm. For sure, I did it all wrong. For people who are genuinely ill with diseases like rheumatoid arthritis. drastic measures…
Nectarine Watercress Wraps with Almond Satay
If there were a contest between a nectarine and a peach, I’d pick the nectarine every time! It probably just boils down to the ‘fuzz’ aspect. I’ve always thought the fuzz distracted from the sweet peach taste. Not the case with the nectarine; it’s pure pleasure. This wrap has become a lunchtime staple for anyone who’s tried it – partly because it’s so easy to make – but mostly because it’s so GOOD! We prefer it with nappa cabbage as the wrap. It’s subtle and pliable and adds its own extra layer of freshness and subtle flavor. But you could try collard greens or romaine as well. And double the…
The Raw Food Diet: What’s In a Name?
The raw food world does this really interesting thing to make the raw food diet appeal to the greater masses and the tentative novice: it gives everything names that evoke cooked food versions of itself. Exhibit A: Not Tuna Salad. Exhibit B: Rawmesan Cheese, Exhibit C… I could go through the alphabet. But I’ll stop myself. All these things sound more than vaguely familiar, right? But are they? I think not. Have you ever had raw pizza? I rest my case. Now, on some dimension, I understand this trickery. Because on the base level what we are all trying to do is fool ourselves into not feeling cheated out of…
In Praise of Slowness: On the Road to More Raw
I love Raw Food. Its that simple. Although ‘More Raw” is my mantra, I’m not a vigilante. Nor am I going to get on my soapbox and tell anyone that this is ‘The Way’: eat Fruits and Vegetables and You Will be Saved. And there’s no reason to tell you that even if it might be true. For me, it kind of is. And for you, it might be too. You’ll find out for yourself, all in good time. Just don’t be in too much of a rush. It’s not all or nothing. The journey to better health is just that: a journey. And, like all journeys, it takes time.…
Raw Food and Me: How It All Began
My real introduction to raw food came as a result of a party and a dream. And in many ways, it was magical. From the moment we met, Alisa and I liked each other. There was no ‘becoming’ friends. We just were. But beyond that we both recognized tremendous benefits to our joining together as business partners. Oddly enough both of us had corresponding visions of creating a women’s community. Now, granted, in Alisa’s community all the women ate raw food – but basically our ideas of creating a space where women could bloom physically, spiritually and creatively were so similar that it seemed synchronistic that the universe had succeeded…
