Dates and Ume Vinegar Sauce
I can hardly consider myself any sort of expert in food experimentation, or even a novice in it. But every once in a blue moon I am struck so powerfully by my own food genius, that it’s like lightning! That being said, this particular occasion was awfully strange. You see, it all started with a thought, “I want salt… and dates! Yep, salty dates sound good right now.” I mean honestly, where did that come from? The thought crossed my mind and I immediately started thinking back to the last time I had my period. You know, just to make sure! Of course, then my rational self kicked in to…
Five Spice Papaya Steak With Parsnip Pineapple Rice
Papaya wasn’t always a favorite of mine. Even as a teenager, the few times I tried it, it kind of left me cold. Not that I often saw it around the grocery aisles in Switzerland, where I lived at the time. I guess it took a more evolved adult palate – and a few trips to warmer climates – for me to fully appreciate the delicacy of the papaya. And of course there was Papaya King in New York where papaya, orange and God-knows-what-other mystery additives and flavorings tranformed the fruit into a sugary smoothie tasting nothing whatever like itself! I’m not even sure papaya was in there at all!…
Crazy for Carrot Burgers
Veggie burgers have never been something I gravitated towards. What with all the oats and beans and the other stuff they usually put in them, they taste like anything but veggies and everything like mush. So that’ s been another one of those things I ‘ve been on a constant quest for. Except I kind of gave up at some point. It lost its allure and just didn’t seem all that important. Until I came up with these carrot burgers. Mind you: my only motivation was to make something that would work well with Melissa’s yellow tomato ketchup. And then that reminded me that I thought a carrot something-or-other would…
Fennel Lemon Spring Rolls
I don’t know about you but when summer comes, I lose all desire for heavy food. Being new to the raw food diet, I have found myself eating the same portion sizes and still being hungry after. This is common. So my challenge has been to make myself meals that are filling, but don’t leave me feeling like I swallowed a hunk of granite. I love eating spring rolls in the summer and always have, but lately, without fish, they just haven’t been as filling. Until now! I filled these gorgeous raw spring rolls with fennel and carrot and micro-greens. Mixed with the sauce, just two of these rolls had…
Dijon Mustard in the Deceptively Raw
Here on the farm we all love fiddling with a manner of vegetarian and vegan recipes, trying to make them into something raw. And not gross. Sometimes it’s really challenging because a lot of these recipes will call for condiments – like dijon mustard, for example – and these things are just not readily available to us oddballs. All these condiments started out being raw, no doubt, but not anymore. Now everything and it’s grandmother is processed. And we’re trying to veer away from that. Things have changed. Mustard has been around for a long time. Originally people used to chew the seeds during meals- ostensibly to disguise the taste…
