Tropical Rice Pancakes with Mango Habanero Sauce
I had a dream… And like most of my dreams it involved food. In this case, rice pancakes. As happens with a lot of our recipes, inspiration comes from the great beyond: the place where so much of our past went to rest. People, places, moments. It’s funny how so many of these memories have some specific food somehow attached to them so vividly. My Hungarian Tanti (that’s ‘Aunt’ to many of you) was somewhat of my guardian when I first moved to New York City at the onset of my twenties. She took ‘watching over me’ very seriously, I must tell you. Sometimes I wasn’t too happy about it…
Persimmon Breakfast Parfait
It’s persimmon season. These delectable little fruits are among our favorites. I’m more partial to Fuyu (they are the shorter, firmer variety) but for cooking the Hachiya is better. No cooking here but I used both in this because, why not? When choosing persimmons you want the skin to be smooth and deep orange in color. The Fuyu will be firm, but it could be crunchy or softer inside. Either way, it is the sweeter variety and I love to add it to salads. The Hachiya are more of a heart shaped fruit, it should be softer to the touch and will be soft inside. They can be a bit…
Cherry Chocolate Chia Pudding
What could be better than chocolate for breakfast? Offhand, I really can’t think of anything. Especially if it’s a breakfast as power-packed as this cherry chocolate chia pudding. Cacao and chia: its like having two super heroes come to work for you! As fall makes its inevitable drop upon us, I’ve been getting this incredible urge to substitute my normally high-fruit first meal of the day for something a little more hefty. I’ve made many a chia pudding before but this time it was a little different because I felt genuinely inspired. Not to mention the fact that I was really craving chocolate. It was actually verging on lust. The…
Wild Rice and Oat Raw Porridge
Those who live in exotic and tropical locales have it made when it comes to adopting a raw diet. It’s a lot easier when fresh fruit is virtually dripping from trees and the markets are overflowing with all manner of produce. We ‘peons’ of colder climes have never even seen some of that stuff. Ask a New Mexican what a rambutan or durian is and you’ll get a blank face staring back at you. Never heard of it. Consequently, it’s in places like this, where cold creeps in and settles like an unwelcome guest, that we need to get creative. We are beckoned from beyond the fruit bowl. And that’s…
Sweet Potato “Bacon” Fritters
Back in the 80’s Marie and I would go downtown every Saturday for brunch at Elephant and Castle in SoHo, NYC. Whether we were roomies or we lived on opposite ends of Manhattan, this was our go to brunch spot. On the menu they had sweet potato bacon fritters that were served with warm maple syrup. They were so good that no matter what else we chose to eat, we had to get at least one serving to share. In this recipe I chose one Garnet and one Purple sweet potato. I love the flavors and color, the flesh is bright, moist and sweet. More importantly, they tend to be…
Not Your Mothers Pop Tarts
I was hardly ever allowed to have pop tarts as a girl. That was the one food arena where, all of a sudden, my mother drew the line. And it’s not because of all the icing and sprinkles on what was supposed to be a breakfast treat. Because she was all about coffee cake and strudel and cinnamon buns – as long as she made them. And she was. literally, baking round the clock. Homemade was healthiest as far as she was concerned. Even if it was filled with sugar, you couldn’t convince her otherwise. I was a ‘growing girl’ in desperate need of ‘sustenance’ and it was her mission…
Cinnamon Raisin English Muffins
From the very beginning of my journey into ‘raw’ I had my issues with raw breads. Someone just wasn’t getting it right. No matter what they did, those ‘loaves’ were coming out stiff and slimy or flat and tasteless as cardboard. I defied anyone to actually label these concoctions ‘bread’. Oddly, as much as anyone defended it, I could tell by the look on their faces that they were not entirely convinced I was wrong. They just didn’t want to admit it. Ultimately, I quickly identified this as an area that demands all the help it can get. And that’s why I was so pleasantly surprised at these raw cinnamon…

Oatmeal Super Antioxidant Bites
Oatmeal is a quick and easy go to option for a nutritious breakfast, but it can also be the most fun. Pairing deliciously with just about any fruit, seed or nut, you can create your own wonderful combination to fit your lifestyle needs. Oatmeal is a naturally gluten free option that isn’t just for breakfast anymore. The first flavor I experimented with was “Nutella”. The scent of hazelnuts and chocolate transports me to my cousin Vita’s house on Staten Island. She would give us all a spoonful of the creamy spread and we would go outside on the stoop and eat our treat. Our chocolate hazelnut bite is a healthy…
Almond Ginger Chia Pudding
Ch-Ch-Ch-Chia! Whenever I prepare food or smoothies with these tiny seeds, I can’t help but remember all those commercials for Chia Pets. And -let’s not forget – the famous Chia Head (scary and ridiculous)! I, myself, succumbed to the lure of the miraculous Chia Pet when I received one of the kits for my birthday. That was a long time ago. As I recall it was a hedgehog that actually looked pretty damn cute when it began to sprout green chia quills! But, never, at that time, did I ever anticipate a day that I would actually be eating those little seeds. And – even more miraculous – that I…
Guacamole and Avocado ‘Toast’
You can’t go anywhere now-a-days without running into avocado toast and, I’ve gotta’ admit, there’s something to it. Avocado is only just one of the worlds best fats – not to mention all the other nutritional benefits packed into these little green gems. And even if we still want to keep our fat intake on the down low, anyone would be doing themselves a favor to choose avocado toast over bacon and eggs any day of the week. For me, this fashionable feast gets dialed up a notch. The toast gets tossed, of course, in favor of some raw multiple O bread. And even though you could, technically, just smash…
