Pear Sauce with Black Currents
Back in the 1980’s I had a boyfriend who introduced me Michio Kushi’s Macrobiotics book. At first I followed the recipes religiously, layering my food, only eating “in season” fruits and vegetables. I was pretty religious about this for a couple of years. One of my favorites was the pear sauce and I continued to make it through the years. It’s cooked, and honestly, usually overcooked, so I didn’t think of it to add here right away. Since we started this site we’ve done many experiments using the dehydrator to soften foods and enhance the flavors of a dish. Sometimes it takes a few tries but not this time. Perfect…
Pineapple Mounds Bar Dessert
Cravings, they’re either going to keep me very happy or be the death of me. I know I said I would never make another chocolate candy again, but here I am. While in the supermarket checkout I glanced over and there, tempting me with it’s coconut goodness was a Mounds Bar. I picked it up, contemplating my memory of it’s chocolate coconut melange on my taste buds and then made the fatal mistake of reading the ingredients. I put it down and ran back and grabbed what I needed to make my own. The choice to put pineapple in the Mounds Bars were purely out of having too much pineapple…

Watermelon Sushi Rolls
As some of you may know we have a couple of watermelon recipes here on the site. Dehydrated, watermelon takes on a completely different texture. Somewhat reminiscent of raw tuna, it lends itself to the perfect substitute for raw fish. I made sashimi Watermelon Sashimi & Forbidden Rice and regularly make poke bowls, but this is the first time I attempted to make sushi rolls. I’m not going to lie, this is not the easiest thing to do. Not that making sushi rolls are hard; they aren’t. The difficulty lies in using the raw Forbidden Rice and keeping it in the nori wrapper. Unlike sushi rice, which is sticky (glutinous),…
4 LAYER BIRTHDAY CAKE
Sometimes you want to make something special but hold on to a recipe for just that right moment. Well, no excuse is better than a birthday to make a cake. Introducing Eden’s birthday cake. Sure, it’s not really a cake per se, but it’s as healthy as it gets, naturally sweet and once decorated, rises to the occasion. Chock full of fruity goodness, this birthday cake will please kids and adults alike. That said, I will do it differently next time. I think certain fruits would work better than the ones I chose. While aesthetically gorgeous, pitaya (dragon fruit) is pretty damn bland. The swirls you see were not just…
Strawberry Pizza with Candied Basil
Okay, so it’s not really a pizza, but it’s delicious. Marie had wanted to make a strawberry pizza and we threw around some ideas. Part of me wanted to make a strawberry sauce but then what do you put on top that’s raw, vegan and appetizing looking. Because to take a quote from one of the very quotable kids here: “why is everything so beige?”. He’s not wrong. One of our goals on this site is to make things that entice you. Food that you want to eat. To encourage people to eat better by visually kicking those food endorphins in first, then dazzle you with flavor. Let’s face it,…
Rollatini with “Smokey” Red Pepper Sauce
My zucchini plants are still going strong. It’s exciting because we are well past the season and it’s pretty damn cold here in northern New Mexico. Even in our sunroom, the temp gets chilly at night. I was expecting maybe one or two more tiny zucchinis, but to my surprise, a mutant began to grow and rollatini was born. Weeks into it’s growth I knew it was going to be a whopper, but I was not prepared for the final outcome. Considering we got that nifty new mandolin, I started planning and got these amazing thin, wide sheets of perfect zucchini. I contemplated making lasagna, but Marie and I agreed…
Crispy “Funion” Rings
Best laid plans. I attempted to make onion rings, which was a great idea, but in order to get the batter crispy, the onion got crispy with it. This is another case where the original idea failed and the delicious Funion Rings were created. Well over a month ago Marie ordered a mandolin. She had a specific recipe in mind (coming soon), but I decided to test it first. Where do I begin? This thing is fabulous! Totally worth waiting for. I am not ashamed to admit that I have zero knife skills and I hate cutting onions. The mandolin was exactly what I needed. In the time it took…
Rainbow Cookies
Three times a charm! I can’t say getting these delicious confections perfectly raw and vegan was easy. While getting the flavor profiles of the rainbow cookies was pretty simple. Finding the right thickness and getting the color right was a bit of a challenge. Italian Pignoli Cookies cookies are my dad’s favorite, rainbow cookies are my mom’s. So of course I had to make them. The layers of flavor from each bite are nothing short of heaven. I’m really patting myself on the back for nailing this recipe. I definitely took the hard road when it came to coloring. I grated beets, ground fresh turmeric and added chlorophyll. Don’t do…
Teriyaki Coconut Bowl
I love teriyaki! So when the craving hit, I opened the fridge and started brainstorming. I had a young coconut, some veggies and rice noodles. My idea hinged on the texture of the coconut meat. It needs to be firm, but still soft, but not too soft (like spoon meat), that you can’t slice it. This coconut was perfect so a recipe was born. I marinated the coconut in a sweet and spicy teriyaki sauce. I could have left it like that, just sitting in the marinade. Instead I put it in the dehydrator to make the texture firmer and to get that marinade deep into the coconut meat. My…
Going Vegan with Baby Steps
I know from experience that going vegan – let alone raw vegan – is not always the easiest road. Whatever our motivation, we are often up against a lifetime of mind and body conditioning that certainly hampers the path. And it’s never made easier by the fact that many of our friends… and even, in some cases, our families put up obstacles to our forward movement just by being so incredulous. “When are you going to start eating real food again?”, they’re asking us. We thought we were. This is obviously some gaslighting technique to convince us we’re insane. And don’t you just love those folks who magically spew all…
