    Ginger Ume Dried String Beans

    January 5, 2021 /

As a kid a friend of my family owned a Chinese restaurant. We would go at the end of the night after everyone had left and eat with the owners and staff. It was always a feast and one of my favorite things on the menu was the dried string beans. One of my Christmas presents from Marie and her family was my own dehydrator. I had absconded with hers when I moved to the farm and it parked itself in the kitchen and never left. I did dehydrate a little pineapple first, but this is the first recipe in the new dehydrator and I’m super happy with the results.…

    Crispy “Funion” Rings

    December 30, 2020 /

Best laid plans. I attempted to make onion rings, which was a great idea, but in order to get the batter crispy, the onion got crispy with it. This is another case where the original idea failed and the delicious Funion Rings were created. Well over a month ago Marie ordered a mandolin. She had a specific recipe in mind (coming soon), but I decided to test it first. Where do I begin? This thing is fabulous! Totally worth waiting for. I am not ashamed to admit that I have zero knife skills and I hate cutting onions. The mandolin was exactly what I needed. In the time it took…

    Cool Mint Oreo Cookies

    December 28, 2020 /

Nothing says winter like peppermint, and nothing pairs better with mint than chocolate, so the cool mint oreo cookies were born. Originally I was going to make a raw-vegan minty hot cocoa, but raw and piping hot are kind of an oxymoron. In raw food prep it’s spice that gives heat and that just wasn’t going to cut it for hot chocolate. Being cookie season around here, I tried to think of how to combine the two flavors and still make it visually interesting. As you can see from the photo, the cookies look fantastic, but the taste…minty perfection! You’ll find this recipe relatively simple. My struggle doesn’t have to…

    Lemon-Lavender Tea Biscuit

    December 17, 2020 /

Sometimes you just want a light biscuit for a sweet snack. Reminiscent of the taste of Pez, I absolutely love this flavor combination. Lemon-lavender go together like PB&J, like “milk” and cookies, like Lucy & Ethel. I made this little biscuit because I like something sweet with my tea late at night. I drink more tea than most which gives me enough excuses to eat cookies before bed. With all the raw things I eat or drink, I refuse to give up my hot tea in winter. In summer I switch to a sun brewed tea. So there’s a trick to these biscuits. Raw cookies in general don’t have that…

    Thai Coconut Soup

    December 16, 2020 /

This is the soup I’ve been wanting to make. Ridiculously quick and easy, this soup will warm you up on a cold day. I made this Thai Coconut Soup in the dehydrator, but as Marie informed me, you can heat it on the stove as long as you check the temperature while heating to keep it raw. This is one of my favorite soups and I have to apologize for the photo, it sucks. But it shouldn’t be a reflection on the delicious flavor of this soup. I was hungry and too impatient to keep taking photos when all I wanted to do was eat. I warned Marie that I…

    Persimmon Breakfast Parfait

    December 12, 2020 /

It’s persimmon season. These delectable little fruits are among our favorites. I’m more partial to Fuyu (they are the shorter, firmer variety) but for cooking the Hachiya is better. No cooking here but I used both in this because, why not? When choosing persimmons you want the skin to be smooth and deep orange in color. The Fuyu will be firm, but it could be crunchy or softer inside. Either way, it is the sweeter variety and I love to add it to salads. The Hachiya are more of a heart shaped fruit, it should be softer to the touch and will be soft inside. They can be a bit…

    Rainbow Cookies

    December 5, 2020 /

Three times a charm! I can’t say getting these delicious confections perfectly raw and vegan was easy. While getting the flavor profiles of the rainbow cookies was pretty simple. Finding the right thickness and getting the color right was a bit of a challenge. Italian Pignoli Cookies cookies are my dad’s favorite, rainbow cookies are my mom’s. So of course I had to make them. The layers of flavor from each bite are nothing short of heaven. I’m really patting myself on the back for nailing this recipe. I definitely took the hard road when it came to coloring. I grated beets, ground fresh turmeric and added chlorophyll. Don’t do…

    Creamy Tomato Soup

    December 1, 2020 /

It’s winter and let’s face it, the last thing someone would think of is a raw soup because that somehow puts ‘cold’ in your mind. Well, you can get around that by warming it in the dehydrator and while it won’t be piping hot, this is the next best thing for the raw purist. You can also use a thermometer and heat on low on the stovetop – just make sure you stop short of that magical 118 degree mark and you’re golden. Of course it helps that this creamy tomato soup recipe is pretty hardy; I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how much it will take the chill…

    Broccoli Salad with Creamy Dressing

    November 19, 2020 /

A couple of months ago a friend brought a broccoli salad from Costco to a little get together. I remember having it a couple of years back and a similar one from Whole Foods. The problem…both contain bacon and the dressing is dairy. Well, once I perfected the coconut bacon, putting this delicious salad together was a breeze. I make enormous batches of coconut bacon and keep it handy. It enhances just about everything and I throw it into practically everything or just snack on it to satiate savory cravings. Throwing all the ingredients together is quick and easy and you can prepare the dressing in advance. This is a…

    Italian Pignoli Cookies

    November 16, 2020 /

Pignoli cookies are my dad’s favorite. Not one holiday has passed without these light traditional almond flavored delights in our home. As a family we have all stood in line several times a year to purchase these cookies from our favorite Italian bakery. Sometimes you’re not so lucky. After waiting hours, you can get to the head of the line and find out they’ve been wiped out. So when I figured out how to make these without baking I was thrilled and I can’t wait to share this recipe with my family this upcoming holiday season. The other advantage of making these from scratch is that instead of costing a…

About This Site

Hello and Welcome! I’m Marie and I’ve been some version of Raw Vegan for the last 18 years… never mind the fact that I’ve managed to drag my entire family along on this ride with me! Truth be told: they barely even knew they were coming!

You – yes, you – can do this too!  But Let’s Get Practical! For most of us, it’s hard to eat Raw all day, every day. Especially if you live in a less than tropical climate. Or perhaps – like me- you’ve got a significant other… or maybe a tribe of ‘others’, who make 100% raw seem like sci-fi fantasy?

We all know that getting as much whole, living, raw vegan food into ourselves is a recipe for health and vibrancy! So why not make it easy and just eat raw for part of the day? Whether you use this as an avenue into an exclusively vegan diet or would never consider completely saying goodbye to meat, eating Raw till Four will guarantee that you’re ingesting fewer processed foods, less animal products and more of what’s actually good for you and your loved ones!

So come on and Get Raw…Practically.
